... The title of this blog has to do with a Will Bruder quote I heard while attending the University of Arizona College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA) during the Fall of 1999 - "Learn to master the trash can and you might become something" - It really resonated with me and has stuck with me to this day. I suppose for me the concept hit hard that although you can discard an idea, concept, sketch, design, whatever for a certain project you may be able to revisit it at a later date under different circumstances - In other words designs never die, they evolve, they hibernate, they circle-back but they never die...Or maybe he was just telling us to quit our ideas of becoming Architects and to go live in a public park somewhere; which, given the current state of the industry probably would not have been such a bad idea...

That is what this Blog will be for me - With over a decade in the industry I have come to realize that what I thought I would be doing on a daily basis and what I actually do are pretty darn different - BUT - I still have ideas, I still have hopes and I still have my creativity; So, I figured this would be a good outlet...I will share my thoughts on work and the industry as well as whatever moments of creativity I can muster - And, yes, at the direction of my Wife I will keep the swearing to an absolute minimum.

Cheers...B.

GO HOME AUTOCAD - YOU'RE DRUNK:

... Dear, AutoCAD - How I hate thee - You are the bane of so many Architects' lives...Random Polylines, Fatal Errors, Unhandled Access Violations and Unhandled Exceptions all leading to the mysterious Autodesk® Error Report - Which, let us be honest here, never actually get sent into Autodesk® for some odd reason (frustration, anger, pure disdain, etc...).

Screen shots of this type of Super Fun Panda Time:

... Dear AutoCAD - How I hate thee.

... And these types of shenanigans always seems to happen when we are under a deadline - Just make sure you have your Autosave set properly or your life will be a form of extra special torture.

A QUICK UPDATE ON "ARCHITECTING:"

... Okay, if you are a total "Archi-dork" like me then chances are you have come across Jody's Blog ( http://www.coffeewithanarchitect.com/ ) - I know I have promoted his stuff here in the past...His work is always witty, measured, true to form and simply spot-on.

Oh yeah, and he "Architects" too...

... So he had this post about a month ago (...I know, I am ALWAYS about a month behind - Sorry, I AM trying - I promise!) - Anyway his post included a list complete with visual examples indicating just how well things seem to be going for us Architects in recent months - Including, but not limited to, churches constructed to look like giant phalluses, soccer stadiums designed to look like...Erh...Certain parts of the female anatomy (...this one is very ironic when you consider its proposed geographic and cultural location and the mostly male-dominate population expected to enjoy its confines for a game of soccer) - AND - He also had some quick comments on Kanye West's recent visit to the Harvard School of Architecture; complete with a video!

Personally, I am sort of getting a little creeped-out by Mr. West - How about you? - Think about it for a second...

Right? - I mean, what in the world is this:

... You are probably asking yourself why I am making commentary on commentary and not actually compiling my own list - Well I suppose the answer lies somewhere between being lazy, recognizing genius and having to deal with Theodore's horrible reaction to his MMR Immunization last week; 103 Degree fever, gnarly rash all over his body, yeah...It has been pretty miserable - But really, I value Jody's work and his perspective on things...

So, without further delay - Here is the link, I hope you enjoy:

... And that is a quick update on "Architecting" - I know you all feel better having read it...And now you know, "and knowing is half the battle."

Cheers,
B.

THINK DIFFERENT:

... You guys remember this? - Well read on after the first Pic and I will show you some serious different thinking - Definitely "Outside the Box" - Cheers:

[Full Disclosure]

... Okay, so I have to admit that I have owned my fair share of Apple products over the years but I My Wife and I transitioned our household to Android-based products around three years ago because we - How can I put this mildly? - Well, I guess you could say we got tired of Apple's "Upgrade or Die" mentality...Our 4th Generation iPod Touches essentially became bricks; installed applications could not update because of the OS the devices were sporting...Sure, they still play music but that is about it; WHATEVER Apple.

Anyway, we now sport matching Samsung Galaxy S4's and have an Android-based Tablet and are generally pretty happy people because Google employees the most brilliant individuals on the planet...

So, more to the point of this post - Have you heard about the Apple vs. Samsung lawsuit and resultant settlement? - If you have not, no biggie...Just "Google" it - See what I did there?

... But I digress, back to the post - I came across this article last month about just how Samsung paid their settlement to Apple:

http://bladebrownshow.com/2013/11/13/lawsuit-paid-in-full-samsung-pays-apple-1-billion-sending-30-trucks-full-of-5-cent-coins/?utm_source=ISInc&utm_campaign=006faed445-11_2011_20_2013&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_a53ec6a425-006faed445-85290269/

That. Is. HILARIOUS.

ROCKAFELLA' Y'ALL:

... In honor of Jay-Z's 44th Birthday a few weeks back Hova' ranked his albums in order of most to least favorite - Here are a couple links to some articles:

http://entertainment.time.com/2013/12/05/jay-z-ranked-his-own-albums-for-his-44th-birthday/

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/jay-z-ranks-his-albums-from-blueprint-to-kingdom-come-20131205

Now it probably goes without saying that I am a huge Jay-Z fan and I own all his albums - AND - For the most part I agree with his list - Although I really did not care for "American Gangster" that much; the movie was good I just thought the album was eh...Anyway, this is Jay-Z's list in case you are interested including his notes on each album:

1. "Reasonable Doubt" (Classic)
2. "The Blueprint" (Classic)
3. "The Black Album" (Classic)
4. "Vol. 2" (Classic)
5. "American Gangster" (4 1/2, cohesive)
6. "Magna Carta" (F***wit, Tom Ford, Oceans, Beach, On the Run, Grail)
7. "Vol. 1" (Sunshine kills this album ...  Streets, Where I’m from, You Must Love Me ...)
8. "BP3" (Sorry critics, it’s good. Empire (Gave Frank a run for his money))
9. "Dynasty" (Intro alone...)
10. "Vol. 3" (Pimp C verse alone... oh, So Ghetto)
11. "BP2" (Too many songs. F*****g Guru and Hip Hop, ha)
12. "Kingdom Come" (First game back, don’t shoot me)

... So, yeah - IMHO "Reasonable Doubt" was a hard LP and "The Blueprint" was pretty much the Soundtrack to my Junior Year of Design School.

Happy Sunday Trash Canners...
